Flower Mound, TX is an incorporated town located partly in Denton County and Tarrant County, and it’s part of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, adjacent to Grapevine Lake. It has a population of 64,669 according to the most recently available census data. Its name comes from the large, 12.5 acre mound that is located in the middle of the town. Settlement began in the 1840s, but the area remained sparsely populated for a long time after it was settled. In 1961, the town of Flower Mound, TX officially was incorporated to avoid being annexed by Irving, TX, a nearby city just northwest of Dallas. When Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport was constructed just 4 miles from the city in the 1970s, the town grew rapidly, rising to 4,402 in 1980, 15,986 in 1990, and 50,702 by the year 2000. Flower Mound has been ranked at #8 on the list of “Best Dallas Suburbs” by D Magazine, due to its extensive parks system and hiking/walking trails, dedication to smart and modern urban planning, and affluent population, as well as a low crime rate and the award-winning Lewisville Independent School District.
